About Besan Halwa

Besan is a Hindi word for gram flour, which is made from splitting black chickpeas. Halwa is a pudding prepared from cereals, lentils, and sugar with the addition of nuts. Besan halwa is a sweet dish of gram flour, ghee, sugar, and nuts. Roast altogether till the thick and creamy consistency is achieved.

Basically, I am a big fan of besan dishes, whether it’s besan barfi, besan laddoo, besan halwa, or it could be anything. I don’t know why, but I genuinely like all the besan dishes. All my family members like it except my mummy. She doesn’t like the sweet dishes much and eats only in moderation.

I am aware of this besan halwa when I have consciousness. I have had a problem with the common cold since my childhood. So, along with medicines, my grandfather suggests eating this halwa for faster recovery due to its warming quality. My mother has prepared it for me until now. After eating, this feels really better.

She prepares it with gram flour, ghee, sugar, water, and black pepper. Black pepper works well for cold and cough problems; everyone knows about it. But here I prepare it without black pepper.

This besan halwa is a time-consuming process, as I told you earlier, with its stirring process. When we roast the besan, it keeps stirring till the end of the process. It’s because if we don’t stir it continuously, there will be lumps in the halwa.

Ingredients

  • Gram flour- I used Rajdhani whole gram flour here. You can also use any good quality of gram flour.
  • Ghee- Homemade ghee is used in my recipe. If you are using store-bought, then buy from a good grocery store.
  • Sugar- I used white refined sugar here, but you can also use brown sugar and sugar powder, too.
  • Milk/Water- I used homemade milk here, which helps give the color and a more creamy taste to halwa. But if you want to use water, then go for it.
  • Nuts- I used almonds here as a topping.

6. When the gram flour smells aromatic and changes color to golden, it means it has roasted properly.

9. Add 1/2 cup of sugar to it.

Tips

  • You can make it with the addition of semolina in an equal ratio 1:1, which is perfectly fine.
  • Stirring continuously is the main step for making this besan halwa. If you don’t stir, there should be lumps in the halwa.
  • Roast the gram on low to medium heat. If you roast it on high heat, it will burn and not roast properly.
  • You can add black pepper powder and other nuts to it if you prepare for a cold and cough.
  • I made it with milk because of its creamy texture, but you can use water.
