Onion Pakoda

Onion pakoda is a popular snack prepared with loads of onion, gram flour, spices, and herbs. It’s a healthy and gluten-free appetizer that is made with just a little effort. They are a little crispy from outside and soft from inside with a combined mixture of salt and sweet taste. So let’s try to make this amazing snack at home.

What is Onion Pakoda

Onion pakoda, or in Hindi we say pyaaj ke pakode a delicious starter or party snacks prepare with thin-sliced onions mixed with gram flour, spices and a few drops of water till they are coated. Fry them in oil until they are crunchier in taste.

The main key ingredient is the vegetable onion here. Just chop the onion, cut into thin slices, with the addition of gram flour and spices. You can also add another vegetable here instead of onion, like cauliflower, potato, etc. The process is almost similar, you can check my version of aloo pakora and gobi pakora.

My baby brother loves to eat onion whether it’s raw as salad, as paratha or as pakora. He inspired me to make this recipe. He told me I eat bread, pakora, aloo pakora, gobi pakora, why did you not offer me onion pakora yet? So I made it the very first time when I tried this. I really loved it and wish why not share it with you all.

Growing up as an Indian family eating pakoras every weekend or every occasion. Without pakoras, every occasion feels incomplete, and onion pakoda is one of them. They are light, crispy, and soft on the inside gives an amazing taste.

They are good to offer with tamarind chutney, tomato ketchup with the sip of hot masala tea. In front of guests, they are also to serve to make them feel special. You can easily find these crunchy onion pakoda on the streets at the tea stalls of the northern areas of India. But if you want instant, then you can make them your own by following the instructions below.

How to make Onion Pakoda

1.Start by taking 4 to 5 medium sized onion. Peel and chop them into thinly sliced pieces.

2. Add chopped coriander leaves and green chilli to it.

3. Now add spices: 1/2 cup of gram flour, 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp of salt, 1 tsp of coriander powder, and 1/4 garam masala powder.

4. Sprinkle 1 tbsp water and mix all the ingredients well till the onions are coated properly with spices.

5. Heat the oil in a pan or kadai on medium to high heat.

6. When the oil is heated, add one by one spiced onions with your fingertips.

7. Fry them for a few minutes on low to medium heat on one side. Then flip them from another side till they changes brown color.

8. When they are brown, it means they are fried properly.

9. Remove them with a spatula.

10. Place them in a plate or serving bowl.

Serve the onion pakoda hot with a cup of tea at breakfast time, as an evening snack, or you can serve them after lunch. They are a good pack for lunch boxes.

Tips

  • Do not add too much water when making the batter. It makes them sticky, so just sprinkle what I mentioned above.
  • Fry them on low to medium heat; if you fry on high heat, there will be the chances of burning pakoras.
  • Do not slice the onion into thick size they should be better in thin slices. Thick slices do not cook properly and don’t give you good taste.

Ingredients
  

  • 4-5 medium sized onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp chopped corinader leaves
  • ½ cup gram flour
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp garam masala
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp water
  • oil for frying

Instructions
 

  • Take the onions peel and chop them in thinly slices.
  • Add coriander leaves, green chili, coriander powder, garam masala, turmeric powder, salt, and gram flour.
  • Add some water and mix well.
  • Heat oil in a kadai.
  • Add the batter in a particular shape one by one.
  • Fry them from both sides till they are golden and brown.
  • When they are brown remove them with spatula.
  • Place them on kitchen paper towel so it absorbs the extra oil.
  • Serve them hot.
